Ancient Tea Trees in the State Forest
Taozizhai lies in Xiangming Township, Mengla County, within the Manzhuan tea mountain of the Six Great Tea Mountains. Unlike most tea gardens, these tea trees do not grow on neatly arranged terraces but are scattered deep within the state-protected forest.
These ancient tea trees grow intertwined with other plants in the primordial forest — surrounded by tall trees, winding vines, and thick moss. No one fertilizes them, no one sprays pesticides, no one prunes them. In this undisturbed natural environment, they absorb rich minerals from deep soil layers, bask in dappled sunlight filtering through the dense canopy, and over centuries have grown into towering tall-pole trees exceeding ten meters in height.
Tall-Pole Trees: Gifts of Time and Nature
The most striking feature in the Taozizhai state forest is the soaring tall-pole ancient tea trees. Their trunks grow straight upward, reaching for limited sunlight through the dense canopy, forming the unique "tall-pole" structure.
The root systems of these trees penetrate several meters deep, reaching mineral-rich soil layers far below the surface. This deep root system not only endows the tea leaves with abundant compounds but also gives the trees remarkable drought resistance — even after months without rain, these ancient trees maintain vigorous vitality.
Harvesting from tall-pole trees presents significant challenges. Tea farmers must climb several meters up the trunk or use long ladders to reach the tender buds. Behind each leaf lies the arduous labor of farmers working in the primordial forest.
Unique Flavors from Primordial Forest
What makes Taozizhai ancient tree tea most captivating is its inimitable "mountain wild qi." When you open a cake of Taozizhai raw tea, the dry leaves emit a complex aroma blending forest moss, wild orchid, and ripe plum.
After the first infusion, intense mountain floral aromas fill the senses. The tea liquor enters soft yet powerful, with extraordinary silkiness. Accompanying a gentle bitter undertone is a swift and enduring sweet aftertaste — salivation springs like a fountain in the cheeks, with cool, profound throat resonance. This dual character combining Yiwu's softness and Manzhuan's weight is the unique imprint of the state forest ecology.
The later infusions only deepen this mountain character. Even after ten infusions, the tea liquor remains golden and bright, sweet on entry, with a lingering finish that ordinary garden teas simply cannot achieve.
Three Generations of Guardianship
Today, the tea gardens are tended by just over a dozen families from Xinmangong and Xiaomanlong villages — the third generation since their grandfathers first discovered these groves while hunting in the mountains.
To protect the state forest ecology, tea farmers only enter the forest during spring harvest. Strict picking standards — one bud two leaves — hand-fried, sun-dried, stone-pressed: every step follows ancient traditional methods. To them, these trees are gifts from their ancestors and the foundation upon which future generations depend.
During spring tea season, farmers set out at 4 a.m., entering the forest before the dew dries, returning before sunset. A skilled picker can harvest less than two kilograms of fresh leaves in a day. This ancient tea grove, covering less than one hundred mu, produces only 500-700 kilograms of first-flush tea annually.
The village faded into history, the land returned to wilderness and became state forest. Yet the ancient tea trees continued to grow, century after century, reaching skyward as towering tall-pole trees.
